The coronation vault

The Cathedral is built in the form of a cross. The centrepoint is called the Coronation Vault. Most of Sweden's kings and queens were crowned here up to 1719.

The vault is 27 meters high (the equivalent of an 8-storey building). At the top, where the battens of the vault meet in a cross, the final stone can be seen (i.e., the last stone of the vault wedged in by the bricklayer). This stone is designed as a golden hand with three outstretched fingers: an image of God's hand blessing us from above. When the central altar is used, e.g. at high mass on most Sundays, it is possible to receive communion directly under the hand of blessing.

To the west (backwards) is the window of the Father. It tells of God the Father - he who created heaven and earth - the life-giving sun, the universe, water and growth.

To the south (right) the window of the Son - God appears to us in Jesus Christ. (This is the largest church window in Sweden, 119m2.

To the north (left) the window of the Spirit - God is with us: the flames of fire, the dove and the red colors are symbols of the Holy Spirit.
